What makes an Eco felt rug pad non-toxic?

Eco pads are non-toxic and non-allergenic, with no latex, no rubber and no clay binder, and they give off no odors or off-gassing.

The warranty page explains why that matters: many rug pads contain chemicals that can hurt the air quality in a home, and others use clay as a binder that breaks down quickly and damages floors.

What does Green Label Plus certified mean for a rug pad?

It means the product passed CRI testing, which ensures it has no chemicals or fillers that will off-gas and break down quickly.

The materials in the Eco pads are tested and approved under that certification, and Rug Pad Wizard says the Eco line is the only felt rug pad on the market with the Go Green label. Its comparison flyer says the pad puts off little to zero VOCs, or volatile organic compounds.

For background on VOCs, the US Environmental Protection Agency publishes a guide to how they affect indoor air quality, listed under Sources.

How does a latex free rug pad compare with latex rubber?

The Pet Barrier backing is polypropylene closed cell technology with no latex. A latex pad uses latex rubber, fillers, styrene and other chemicals that off-gas.

The table below follows Rug Pad Wizard’s own Pet Barrier vs latex rubber comparison flyer.

Why does latex in a rug pad matter for allergies?

The comparison flyer states that 4.3 percent of the population is allergic to latex rubber, a worldwide average from a 2016 review in the Journal of Occupational Health.

That review, by Wu, McIntosh and Liu, is hosted on PubMed Central by the National Library of Medicine. Eco pads have no latex or rubber, so there is no latex allergy concern to work around with the pad itself. Foundation, a thin rubber backed pad, does contain latex, per its brochure.

Is an Eco felt rug pad eco friendly?

Yes. Eco felt is 100 percent recycled and 100 percent recyclable, and its washable backing does not degrade, so the pad is not thrown out early.

The yarn in the felt is manufacturing scrap from carpet mills, and the polypropylene backing is a byproduct of petroleum processing. The pad is 100 percent made in the USA, and Rug Pad Wizard is based in Calhoun, Georgia.

More questions about non-toxic rug pad

Is an Eco felt rug pad low VOC?

The comparison flyer says the Eco pad puts off little to zero VOCs, or volatile organic compounds. The Eco pads also carry the CRI certification and have no odors or off-gassing.

What is off-gassing in a rug pad?

Off-gassing is the chemical smell a new rug pad gives off when chemicals are added in processing. Eco pads have no odors and no off-gassing.

Is a non-toxic Eco rug pad safe for pets?

Yes. Rug Pad Wizard’s Eco Diamond brochure describes its Go Green certified felt pad as safe for consumers and pets. The Eco pads are non-toxic and non-allergenic, with no latex.

Does an Eco felt pad contain polyvinyl chloride (PVC)?

No. The Eco backing is polypropylene closed cell technology. Rug Pad Wizard’s warranty page warns that latex, PVC and other backings can break down quickly and stain, mar or discolor hardwood or tile.

No. Only the Eco felt line is published as latex free. The Foundation brochure describes rubber with a high concentration of pure latex, and the latex content of the other rubber backed pads is not published.

Do Eco pads use a clay binder?

No. Eco pads have no clay binder. The warranty page says some makers use clay as a binder that degenerates quickly and damages flooring.

Where is the latex rubber in other rug pads made?

The comparison flyer says the latex rubber in other pads is imported from Southeast Asia, while 100 percent of the Pet Barrier pad is made in the USA.

Does the Eco pad backing break down when it is washed?

No. The comparison flyer likens the Pet Barrier backing to a plastic milk jug that never breaks down from home or professional cleaning. It says washing latex rubber makes it degrade faster.
